Department Information Technology Job Purpose: The Linux System Administrator ensures the availability, continuity andsecurity of enterprise data and information technology systems.
The position is responsible for the evaluation, installation, and maintenance of all assigned systems, serving as a staff specialist on enterprise-wide computing services.
The position also provides technical expertise through the identification of new processes and technical alternatives to resolve problems and make general improvements.
Essential Duties: - Ensure 24/7 operations of highly available customer-facing and internal server environments- Optimize performance, reliability, survivability, and security of each host and its associated services- Install, configure, and maintain underlying hardware and software systems comprising the enterprise- Research, design and implement new technologies, deploy servers and services, coordinate with internal teams as required for business initiatives, product lifecycles, infrastructure improvements, and security compliance- Manage access to servers and services- Respond to outages as necessary- Establish and maintain all aspects regarding system security and required patches- Maintain a current understanding of the latest developments in hardware and software- Provide training to staff members relating to system software- Establish performance measurement techniques and utilize that data to fine tune system performance- Maintain contact with vendors relating to hardware and system software components and to determine the cause of systems failure and arrange for preventive maintenance and unscheduled maintenance- Establish and test the adequacy and timeliness of system backup procedures- Participate in plans for equipment upgrades or additions and adjust operating schedules accordingly- Work closely with staff members to investigate system-related problems in such areas as system security, network access and other interfaces- Monitor, report, and troubleshoot the availability, performance, usage, and security of assigned services and related infrastructure Additional Skills Required: - Experienced with administering storage area networks- Understanding of networking and hardware technologies- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills- Experience with Apache- Understanding of cloud technologies- Experience with enterprise directory services (LDAP, Active Directory)- Excellent oral and written communications and customer relations skills- Demonstrated ability to work and function within a team environment- Ability to work independently and multi-task- Must possess strong customer service skills- Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required- Must be able to support the Universitys commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture - Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the Universitys Catholic and Jesuit mission Minimum Education Requirements: Associates degree in computer science or related field Preferred Education: Bachelors degree preferred Minimum Job Experience Requirements: - Minimum of 2 years of experience administering Linux operating systems, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Ubuntu- Experienced with server and desktop virtualization in a mid-to-large scale data center environment, preferably VMWare Preferred Qualifications: Schedule/Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.
